The Under 15s put in the best performance of their Saxon Shore League season so far on a beautiful summer's evening at Hythe. With a true pitch and a lightning quick outfield Sibton soon realised they would have to post a decent score when Hythe invited them to bat.
Jordan Laing (14), Ryan Meers (14) and Georgie White (11) all made useful contributions but the lynch-pin of the innings was Yam who stayed until the 16th over for his 34 and batted very sensibly. Olivia Barber (19) provided the required acceleration towards the end of the innings with some nice straight hitting and Sibton finished their 20 overs on a very respectable 115 for 6.
The Hythe innings started slowly thanks to some poor running and some tight bowling by Jordan and Ryan Meers. Ryan removed two batsmen in a good opening spell of 4 0 12 2. Georgie (4 0 22 2) and Olivia then came on and removed 3 more players and the home team were reduced to 41 for 5 off 11 overs. It looked like plain sailing for Sibton but two Hythe batsmen now cut loose and the total raced to 96 for 5 at the start of the 19th over. Yam then struck taking a good caught and bowled. Hythe panicked and two batsmen ran themselves out in consecutive balls. At the start of the final over 16 runs were required. A couple of boundaries had Georgie fearing the worst. She set her field right back but the bowler, Will Mainwaring, kept his head and Hythe ended up 6 runs short on 109 for 8.
This was an exciting match which we should probably have won more easily. The batting was an enormous improvement on the game against Hawkinge and the bowling was steadier. The ground fielding lapsed at times but we held our catches which is so important. Well done one and all!
