Watched by probably the largest crowd of senior members ever assembled, at two minutes past two, Ben Allon (Uncle Ben these days) snicked a tempting half volley through the covers, ran two, and the scoreboard recovered from a nervous hiccough then flickered back into life to register 126. It no longer mattered what Blackheath did to Folkestone, that was the Championship and Sibton Park join the Top Ten, becoming probably the smallest club ever to play in KCL's top flight. 254 points and no draws, as they almost say on Mastermind.

Congratulations all round on all the hard work that has gone into taking the club from the bottom of the KCL to the top, an achievement that must have looked like a wastrel's daydream just 10 years ago when we were shovelling slurry off the square.

It was easy to see, in the professional way that the 1s despatched Hythe, winning by 131 runs, how much the team have benefitted from hard work and Mark Dobson's coaching in the winter but particular thanks should also go to all those who have contributed indirectly, by pioneering the ECB development strategy, helping to build the finest playing facilities in Kent, running a highly successful Junior Section, managing the club's affairs and finances, making the teas and doing all the thousands of other jobs that need to be done well to make a club successful.

A great day. And an opportunity to build further.

That's it, it's all over.

In the final game, and one in which we needed to atone for the mauling we had at Hythe back in July, the skipper won the toss and requested to bat first.

Bish and AA, well mainly Bish, got off to an absolute flyer, Bish quickly reached his 50 whilst AA was still on 7, the score was on 84 in the15th over before AA fell for 20. Then two runs later and Bish on 82, he ran himself out for the second wicket.

Sorry for this, yyyeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss get in there!

Anyway, as a spectator this week, I went along as team bus driver/temporary coach/lone nervous supporter. Turned up, and wow oh wow, was it wet. A delayed start till 1.45pm, meant a reduced overs game of 40. So we win the toss and decide to field first.

The ball is just sticking in/to the ground as Rowey is coming off at my pace, and that's slow. A couple of wickets tumble but the score is moving on at 60 for 3 off 15 overs. Some decent fielding, some well taken catches, and AA takes 5 wickets, Tugboat, on debut, picks up 2 and Rowey scoops 3 as Harvel are bowled out in the 38th over for 111. A small total but in the context of the pitch, a difficult total as it is a complete leveler.

After a resounding whipping by Sandwich last time round, we were looking to prove we were better than that, and so it proved.

Winning the toss, the skipper got us batting in overcast, light drizzly conditions. Again a good start before AA was caught at mid wicket for 22. Bish and Payno then knocked the ball around nicely before Payno reached his 50, overtaking Bish, but was immediately dis-missed for 50 by stalwart Alan Amos. Bej came and went, Hickers got in and Bish passed his 50 and looked to push on. Bish finally fell for 74, trying to hoik a straight one, Hickers went for 19, Hobo for 8 after a big six and a broken window, and Lodgey deciding a single was a good idea straight to mid off. We ended on a decent 194, probably 20 or 30 short, but a decent total.Sandwich bowled well enough.

After a couple of match-free weeks Sibton's Under 15s were looking for a positive result against Hythe in the Saxon Shore League to build on their win against Betteshanger at the end of May.  The Park pitch was looking flat and the weather was set fair as Hythe went in to bat first.
